Going Over Some Less Obvious Summer Hazards To Pets And How You Can Protect Them
Summer in Cincinnati is filled with sunshine, pool days, and festive celebrations. But, it also brings unique risks for our furry friends. At Stay At Home Pet Services, our mission is to help you keep your pets safe, happy, and healthy all season long. Beyond the obvious dangers, here are essential tips to protect your pets from less obvious summer hazards, plus extra advice to ensure their well-being during the hottest months.

Sunburn in Light-Coated Dogs
- Dogs with short or light-colored fur, and those with exposed skin on their nose, ears, or belly, are especially vulnerable to sunburn.
- Always use a sunscreen formulated for pets—never human sunscreen, which can be toxic.
- Apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas and seek shade during peak sun hours (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Never shave your dog’s coat; their fur provides natural protection against sunburn and overheating.
- Watch for redness, tenderness, or peeling, and consult your veterinarian if you notice any changes in your pet’s skin.
Pool Safety for Pets

- Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Always supervise pets around pools, and consider a doggy life jacket for those new to the water.
- Teach your dog how to safely enter and exit the pool, and provide a ramp or steps if needed.
- Rinse your pet after swimming to remove chlorine or salt, which can irritate their skin and coat.
- Never let pets drink pool water, as chemicals can upset their stomach or cause more serious health issues.

Fireworks and Thunderstorm Safety
- Loud noises from fireworks and storms can cause anxiety or prompt pets to run away.
- Keep pets indoors during fireworks and storms. Close windows and curtains, and play calming music or white noise to help reduce stress.
- Create a safe, quiet space for your pet with familiar bedding and toys.
- Ensure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they panic and escape.
- Talk to your veterinarian about calming aids or anxiety wraps if your pet is especially sensitive to noise.

More Summer Pet Safety Advice
- Hydration is Essential: Always provide unlimited access to fresh, clean water. Pets can become dehydrated quickly in hot or humid weather.
- Avoid Hot Pavement: Asphalt and concrete can burn your pet’s paws. Walk your dog during cooler morning or evening hours, and stick to grassy areas when possible.
- Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even a few minutes in a parked car can be deadly, as temperatures can soar to dangerous levels rapidly—even with windows cracked.
- Watch for Signs of Heat Stress: Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, restlessness, unsteadiness, abnormal gum color, vomiting, and collapse. If you notice these signs, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
- Proper Grooming: Brush your pet regularly to remove excess fur and help them stay cool. Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog, as their coat protects them from both heat and sunburn.
- Garden and Yard Safety: Make sure your plants are safe for pets, and store fertilizers and insecticides out of reach. Avoid cocoa bean mulch, which is toxic to dogs.
- Parasite Prevention: Warm weather brings fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Keep your pet on veterinarian-recommended preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworm.
- Exercise Smart: Consult your vet before starting a new exercise routine, especially for overweight pets or short-nosed breeds. Take frequent breaks and bring water for both you and your pet.
