National Pet Fire Safety Day

Offering Some General Pet Fire Safety Tips And Discussing The National Holiday That Promotes And Educates Pet Owners About Pet Fire Safety

Every year on July 15th, we observe Pet Fire Safety Day to raise awareness about how to protect our beloved pets from the dangers of house fires. Pets are part of our families, and ensuring their safety in the event of a fire is just as important as safeguarding ourselves. Here are some essential pet fire safety tips to help you keep your furry friends safe.

1. Create A Fire Escape Plan

Just like you have a fire escape plan for your family, you should have one that includes your pets.

Identify Exits:

Make sure you know all the exits in your home and plan multiple escape routes.

Practice Drills:

Regularly practice fire drills with your pets to get them used to the routine. This should be done at least once a year. According to FirstClassFireProtectionFolk, fire drills should ideally be practiced 2 to 3 times a year.

Designate A Pet Caretaker:

Assign a family member to be responsible for each pet, ensuring they know what to do in an emergency. Ensure the assigned pet caretaker is well aware of their roles and how to handle the pets during a fire evacuation.

2. Pet-Proof Your Home

Preventing fires from starting in the first place is key to keeping your pets safe. Here are a few ways to do so:

Secure Loose Wires:

Pets can chew on electrical cords, which can cause a fire. Keep wires out of reach or use cord protectors.

Supervise Pets Around Open Flames:

Never leave pets unattended around candles, fireplaces, or stovetops.

Use Flameless Candles:

Consider using flameless candles to eliminate the risk of pets knocking over an open flame.

3. Install Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are crucial for early fire detection. There should be smoke alarms located in every room and every floor of your home. This is especially true for the kitchen, bedrooms, and any room with a fireplace.

Place Detectors Near Pet Areas:

Ensure smoke detectors are installed near areas where your pets sleep or spend most of their time.

Check Batteries Regularly:

Test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

4. Keep Leashes And Carriers Handy

In the event of a fire, you may need to quickly evacuate your pets.

Leashes And Carriers:

Keep leashes and carriers near the exits so you can easily grab them on your way out.

Know Where Your Pets Hide:

Familiarize yourself with your pets’ hiding spots, as frightened animals often seek refuge.

5. Alert Firefighters

In the unfortunate event that you can’t locate your pets during an evacuation, inform the firefighters immediately.

Window Clings:

Use pet alert window clings to notify firefighters of the number and type of pets inside your home. Update these clings regularly.

Pet Information:

Keep a list of your pets, including their names, breeds, and medical needs, to provide to emergency responders.

6. Prepare An Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit ready can make a huge difference during a fire.

Important Documents:

Keep copies of vaccination records and ownership documents in the kit.

7. Know Basic Pet First Aid

Understanding basic pet first aid can be lifesaving in emergencies.

CPR:

Learn how to perform CPR on pets. Many local organizations and veterinarians offer pet first aid courses. For more information about the basics of pet CPR, click here

However, we strongly recommend taking a pet CPR and First Aid course. The American Red Cross offers online courses that will teach you everything you need to know about pet first aid and pet CPR. For more information about these courses, click here

Burn Care:

Know how to treat minor burns and have supplies like sterile gauze and saline solution in your emergency kit.
